As the end of a highly successful 2012 approaches, it is time to
recognize the monthly Faculty Accolades, which shine a spotlight on the
major accomplishments of our faculty, students and staff. Among this
month's Accolades are Ted Stathopoulos, Bodhisatta Hajra, Catherine
Mulligan, Ola Amayru, Nizar Bouguila, Mohammad Nurujjaman, Abdelwahab
Hamou-Lhadj, Hoi Dic Ng and Ted Obuchowicz, Wai Yee Chow, Nella
Fiorentino, Jeffrey Landry, Sonia McCalla, and Georgia Michalakopoulos.
Ted Stathopoulos and Bodhisatta Hajra have come up with environmentally friendly building guidelines for modern cities. This provides a much-needed update to the industry standards developed decades ago by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, the international technical society that sets the rules for building ventilation. Stathopoulos and recent Concordia graduate Hajra wrote the study, recently featured in the peer-reviewed journal, Building and Environment. Read the Concordia news release.
On November 2, Senate gave unananimous approval to the proposed Concordia Institute for Water, Energy and Sustainable Systems. Catherine Mulligan, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, will be the Institute's inaugural director. Students will be able to apply for the new, innovative and multidisciplinary program immediately and projects could begin as early as January 2013.Read the full story in NOW Concordia.

Nizar Bougila (photo on left) and PhD candidate Ola Amayri (right) have conducted a comprehensive study of several spam filters in the process of developing a new and efficient one. They have now proposed a new statistical framework for spam filtering that quickly and efficiently blocks unwanted messages. Their breakthrough was featured prominently by the media in November. And congratulations to all those who were winners of the Teaching Excellence Awards and the Dean's Staff Recognition Awards. The teaching award winners were Abdelwahab Hamou-Lhadj, Hoi Dic Ng and Ted Obuchowicz. The staff awards went to Wai Yee Chow, Nella Fiorentino, Jeffrey Landry, Sonia McCalla, and Georgia Michalakopoulos.
