The User-Managed Desktop or Laptop
Description
Faculty members may select an office-managed or user-managed computer. The ENCS-owned user-managed desktop or laptop is a computer system configured with a basic set of software applications. It is loaded with Windows 7 and/or Scientific Linux 6.2. Users can install software and their profiles are saved locally. AITS provides limited support.
- As the name implies, User-Managed systems are maintained by the owner of the computer. You will be given the "root" username and password for the system. Any additional software installations or configurations must be done by the owner of the computer.
- Data saved locally is NOT backed-up. If you accidentally delete a file or your hard-drive crashes, you will lose the data that was saved on the hard drive. It is recommended that you map your network drives and save your data on these backed up file storage locations.
- The owner of the desktop is responsible for updating the anti-virus software (SOPHOS).
- The owner of the desktop is responsible for patching the operating system.
Expected tasks to be performed:
- Adding a local desktop account
- Mapping network shares to drives (Windows) or mount points (Linux) on your desktop
- Adding a networked printer
- Updating Sophos Antivirus
Note: We strongly recommend that the desktop running Windows be restarted at least once every week in order to prevent your personal profile from being corrupted.

Sophos Antivirus
ENCS currently supports SOPHOS antivirus software. You can only install SOPHOS on a computer owned by the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. A Faculty or staff member of ENCS can download SOPHOS. For more information on how to downalod sophos anti-virus click here.
